Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
